Whether you're a registered NHS patient or seeking private dental care, here's a guide on what steps to take in case of a dental emergency after hours.

For All Patients
  1. Contact NHS 111: If you are an NHS patient and experience a dental emergency outside of normal practice hours, call NHS 111. They can provide advice and, if necessary, direct you to an emergency dentist.
  2. Visit an Emergency Dental Clinic: NHS 111 may refer you to an emergency dental clinic if your situation requires immediate attention. These clinics are equipped to handle urgent dental issues outside regular office hours.
  3. Prescriptions and Advice: NHS 111 can also guide you on obtaining any necessary prescriptions or offer advice on managing pain and discomfort until you can see your regular dentist.

General Tips for All Patients:
  1. Manage Pain: While waiting for professional help, manage pain with over-the-counter pain relievers (following the recommended dosage) and avoid placing aspirin or any other painkiller directly on the affected area.
  2. Addressing Swelling: Use a cold compress on the outside of your cheek to help reduce swelling in case of trauma or infection.
  3. Protecting a Knocked-Out Tooth: If a tooth is knocked out, handle it by the crown (top) and not the root. Rinse it gently with saline solution, if available.

Remember, it's crucial to seek professional dental care as soon as possible. Dental emergencies should not be ignored, and timely intervention can make a significant difference in preserving oral health.
